I miss the walking into the store with bolts and bolts of fabric stacked together on a wall organized by color or theme. I'd fall in love with so many, I couldn't resist (and my closets at home prove it. )
You can find fabric everywhere in Hong Kong, but unfortunately they are displayed in large books. The real challenge is finding a book that's even close to what your looking for. Where do you start the search? Every shop has hundreds of the same books - local and imported, but never what I want in the price point I need. Shopping the lanes is a 'hit or miss' and not usually great for the decorating needs. Fabric from China has a tendency to have flaws in the bolts (you are sold the fabric with the flaws) and stretch with time. So frustrated hours later, as my parking meter adds up, I still haven't found what I'm looking for and know I have to start the search somewhere else probably with the same results.
I've
been trying to find on line stores in the USA that will ship to Hong
Kong. Even with the shipping you're ahead of local prices.

Fabric is usually the first place where designing a room starts. The principle is simple - let the fabric set the tone and style of the room. Every designer knows that luscious fabrics can make even a simple space with hand-me-down furniture look pulled together.
When you begin to choose colors for your latest decorating project, one place to start is your favorite patterned fabric that you love and want to feature in the room. But how do you decide which colors from the fabric design to use?
- Walls and Carpet: For the walls and carpet, pick out the palest color in the pattern. This is usually a fairly soft and neutral color which will serve as the background for your design.
- Upholstery: Use the medium and more lively colors for the majority of the upholstery pieces.
- Accessories: Use the darkest colors for accents - pillows, area rugs or occasional chairs.
This is a basic formula. Find magazine photos and keep a notebook of your favorites when shopping. Keep the color palette with you at all times - you never know when you might find that 'something' that will just do the trick. Remember the best rooms - 'are often discovered by accident'.
